Caixa Capital Risc, the private equity branch of "la Caixa", led this round, and was joined by existing partners and the management team. The company also obtained support from the Spanish National Innovation Company (ENISA). The new capital injection is aimed at accelerating the growth of the company.

Barcelona, June 2011 - Omnia Molecular is devoted to the discovery and development of new anti-infective compounds. The company owns a patented technology to detect both the antibiotic activity and the potential toxicity of new compounds, thereby accelerating the discovery and development of effective and non-toxic compounds.

Omnia Molecular is focusing its platform on difficult-to-treat hospital infections. According to the World Health Organization, bacterial infections are responsible for more than 7 million deaths annually, at 13% of the total, which represents the leading cause of death worldwide. In the U.S. alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that approximately 1.7 million hospital-acquired infections cause or contribute to 99,000 deaths each year. Other sources indicate that 10% of hospital patients suffer an infection, a fact which results in treatment expenditures globally estimated to be in the range of $5-11 billion per anum.

The global market for antibiotics and antivirals has grown in recent years at rates of 8%, with annual sales of over €50 billion euros in the seven major markets worldwide. Antibiotics alone account for more than €35 billion. However, the number of products in development has decreased dramatically in parallel to the expiry of the most lucrative patents, which has led to renewed interest in new innovative anti-infective compounds.

Since 2008, Omnia Molecular's technology has been validated for use against different pathogens, demonstrating the technical feasibility and fine-tuning the platform to develop new drugs. The company currently has 3 programs optimized to discover potentially therapeutic compounds, and agreements with several companies and organizations to exploit their compound libraries.

The aim of this new round is to fund the development of most promising compounds against MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) to the proof of concept stage in animals by 2012. The first human trials are planned for 2014. These compounds will be available for co-developed with partners in the pharmaceutical industry.

Molecular Omnia has the support of Caixa Capital Risc since 2007.
